My kids and I were privileged to try out the Math Rider game download recently! Math Rider is a math game that helps your child master their math facts in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We downloaded the game onto our MAC desktop with no problems and all 3 of my children began playing right away!
Because my children all need practice in reviewing their math facts, I created each of them a screenname/account on Math Rider. I added Math Rider to their list of daily list of subjects to be complete and assigned them 10 minutes daily. Often times they continued to play on past their 10 minutes…which is the sign of a winner in our household!
With Math Rider, we started out on the very first QUEST, addition, at the easy level. I let my children progress as they would through the beginning addition facts and my older children moved more quickly on to subtraction and then multiplication. Caleb, who is in 2nd grade, had a little more trouble hitting the buttons quickly enough or missing them from time to time just because he punched the wrong number on the computer keyboard. He did end up getting frustrated that he could not get any further on the map with his quest…but I kept encouraging him that when he got all his math facts correct he would get to move on. A few times I let him tell me the answers to punch in and then I did the keyboarding so that he could move on. This worked well for us also.
Overall, we enjoyed this game a lot and I think it is great for math practice! I do think, like any game, the excitement wears off after a few weeks. So, in our home, we like to change it up. I will probably add Math Rider to our “rotation” of online/computer games and that way the kids will enjoy it for longer!!
The one thing thing I think I would change about this game is the time it takes for mastery. I wish there was some way to get a little more progress when you do WELL instead of having to get 100% mastery on EACH math type of math fact. In fact, none of my children have gotten 100% yet…so we are still working toward the goal! I think it would be helpful to have maybe smaller goals to encourage children to keep trying.
If you are interested in Math Rider for your home, you can have a free 7-day trial! Or you can purchase a download of this game for $47 which includes software updates FOR LIFE. You will also receive a 30 day money back guarantee with your purchase.
