I love Pinterest. I’ve been an avid fan, user and pinner for years now. But, recently, I have come to love Pinterest for another reason: decorating my home!
Disclaimer: I want to add to this post that finding contentment in our homes is so important. Searching on Pinterest doesn’t lead me to envy or be discontent, but I know a lot of folks do find that. If searching on Pinterest for new couches and pretty dishes leaves you feeling yucky on the inside, don’t do it! I tend to find inspiration and a lot of how-to for decorating my home on Pinterest. But every personality is different. This post is just a little inspiration for you!! Find creative ways to decorate your home in frugal and fun ways and I guarantee you will be more content with what you have without spending a lot!
If we are Facebook friends you have probably noticed that we have our home for sale right now. We aren’t moving away from our area, but looking for a home just a little bit bigger with a 4th bedroom.
So, as soon as I started dreaming about new homes, I started dreaming about re-decorating and changing some things up. I have loved decorating our current, but small, home and I love finding deals and I also love shopping for those good deals.
We won’t be able to afford ALL new stuff, but a few new little things might be in the budget. I hope.
So, I started looking at my “For the Home” Pinterest, I started noticing patterns about what I was pinning.
Take a look:
So, I’m bad to just walk through Hobby Lobby or Target and see something I like and just grab it. I don’t stop to think about whether it matches or if it goes with my “style” or not.
My style is pretty eclectic, but looking at my pinterest board has helped me to define and narrow down my style and what I love. I noticed last week that pins I had pinned OVER a year ago were still very similar to what I was pinning a few days ago for our new house {whenever we sell and move.}
I noticed lots of neutral colors, light/bright/white space, wood and metal combos of furniture, rustic yet still a little shabby chic. So, I started realizing that maybe my style was a little more defined than I thought!
What does any of this matter?
Well, when I shop in the future I think I have a better idea of what I will really LOVE in the LONG RUN. I don’t want to pick up things here and there that don’t really go with what I love overall.
I think this will help me to be more intentional and purposeful in what I fill my home with.
I want to fill my homes with things I love, not just things that are on sale.
First, though, you need to know what style you love!
Search Pinterest to Determine Style
What style of home decor do you love? There is american gothic, coastal, contemporary, cottage, country, eclectic, french, mediterranean, modern, shabby chic, rustic, and more. Maybe you’d like to take a peek at this page or at this link to help narrow in your style.
Also, go to Pinterest and in the search bar, type in “shabby chic living room” and see what comes up. Do you like it? Not you? You are working toward narrowing down your style!
I think I’m really a combo of a few of the styles, maybe there is one term to define my style I just don’t know what that word is. ha! So I love casual, cozy, shabby chic and rustic. I also like a little bit of cottage, but think that some of these could be very similar with different names.
Strangely enough, I also like a little bit of rustic with the industrial look I’ve seen places. Like all the distressed wood WITH different metals? I love that look!
Have you ever looked at Dot & Bo? If you sign up we BOTH get a $20 coupon! Or what about Joss & Main? I love the farmhouse rustic pages on both these sites!
How to Use Pinterest to Decorate Your Home
- Start a pinterest board just for dreaming. Don’t worry with where to buy it, how much it is, or think about it too much really. Just create a board and pin to it only things you LOVE.
- Scroll back over any boards you’ve created for rooms in your home. Notice patterns.
- Delete pins that you no longer love. Only keep things on these boards that you LOVE.
- Begin to see your style emerge! Notice certain colors you pin time and time again, notice certain styles of furniture that always appear in your pins.
- Have FUN filling your home with things you LOVE. Now you KNOW what you love because you’ve been creating a style board and noticing patterns that tell you a lot about your style!
Create Boards for Specific Decor or Rooms
I love gallery walls. I love plate walls. I love searching for things like this on Pinterest! So, why not create a board just for gallery walls? It will help you to narrow your likes/dislikes even more! In fact, when I started my board for gallery walls I quickly noted that I don’t like symmetrical!!
SO FUNNY! I have typically liked symmetrical in the past. But for my plate wall and other things I’ve seen online, I don’t necessarily want it to be symmetrical.
See, I’m learning new things about my style.
All of this searching and dreaming and pinning isn’t meant to make us discontent with our homes. Learning to be content, even in our small home now, has been a true lesson in joy for me. I.love.our.home. I’m sad in a lot of ways to leave it!!
But, even in contentment, there will be times we purchase a new frame or need a new couch or want to update our pillows. Having these searches and pins will help you to truly fill your home with things you love!
