We met for our first science co-op after Christmas and we are up to chapter 7 in Apologia’s Exploring Creation Human Anatomy! This chapter teaches us all about blood! I will say that I found this chapter to be pretty detail-heavy for our young elementary kids, just as a heads up if you are considering this curriculum. I have found this book to be EXCELLENT, especially for doing weekly with a group of friends! But, there have been a few parts that I have had to skip over in the book just because it is over my kids heads.
We made a model of our blood as described in the textbook.
Corn syrup = plasma
Red hots = red blood cells
Smartie or white candy = white blood cells
Sprinkles = platelets
Then, we tried another experiment that was in the book – we had 6 different kinds of cereal, we crushed them up and used a magnet to see if there was iron in the cereal!!
Sounds fun and interesting, right?
Well, if you can make out this highly scientific chart, NONE of our cereals had any iron cling to the magnet! We aren’t sure if this is because cereal really has NO IRON in it (ha) or because this experiment just doesn’t really work.
Has anyone else out there tried this one?
The kids DID have fun crushing the cereal, though! ha!

We did the candy blood model too! Such fun!
