For our 2nd week studying the sun, my friend Jennifer did an experiment with the kids that they LOVED and are still talking about today!! 🙂
She bought some UV Color Changing Beads, similar to the ones linked here. (I used this link because it also shows how this works in case any of you want to try it!)
First, Jennifer talked with the kids about the sun and it’s characteristics. We talked about what happens when we go out in the sun for long periods of time with no protection, we discussed many different ways of protecting ourselves.

Then, Jennifer gave each child a baggie with beads. Each baggie had a different variable with it – 1 bag with just plain beads, 1 bag had sunscreen on its beads, 1 bag we protected with sunglasses, 1 bag we put in the shade, etc.
Then, the kids all decided to put their beads in the water to see if that made a difference!!
Overall this was a great experiment and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is studying the sun!! The kids had a great time with it and we were all (adults included) amazed at how much the beads changed and with some of the results our experiment produced!
