When learning about the planet Venus, we did 2 fun activities!
First: VOLCANOES!
In addition to these awesome volcanoes, we did a little bit of Venus art with oil pastels! The kids drew circles with a white pastel, then used their fingers to smudge the circle a bit. Each child chose what color they wanted their planet to be. They colored most of the circle in except for the lower right side – we explained to them about shadows and how we can create those with our art. After each step we had the kids smudge/smear with their fingers. I love it when we can try new art mediums in our science class! 🙂

Hi! I was so excited to find your post about Venus on Pinterest as my kids and I are studying it right now with Apologia’s curriculum. Could you please tell me more about the process for making the volcanoes? Is that a 1 or 2 liter bottle, what material did you cover it with, and I am assuming it is baking soda & vinegar with red food coloring?
Thanks!

Hi Stephanie! This post was from 2011. I’m so sorry I don’t have a great memory and can’t remember all the details! LOL! I do know these weren’t 2 liters, they were the individual sized soda bottles. We built up the volcano with a flour/dough mixture. And yes, we used the baking soda -vinegar mixture with red food coloring. 🙂 I think!! Have fun!
