I titled this series 31 Days of Prayer FOR our children and WITH our children. I wanted to spend a little bit of time focusing on praying with our children. This portion will not be as lengthy, because I am (again) no expert, but my children are also young. I am just learning everyday right along with them!! I don’t have years of wisdom in praying with my children!!
While my kids are young and since we do home school, I consider this a huge opportunity to share and instill in my children many of the things that I feel are important. Prayer is definitely one of those.
I will say from the get-go, our mornings are not always perfect. Our days are rarely perfect. We have had a lot of bad days in our home school, especially recently!! So, when I share that I pray and read the Bible and do other things with my children, don’t be tempted to think that I have it all together or that I’m a better mom or that my kids are better. Because none of those things are true!! Like many of you, most days I’m just hanging by a thread and praying for grace in the moment.
I actually think that it is because we struggle and because we aren’t perfect that it is important to teach our kids about prayer. It’s important for my kids to know that I don’t have it all together, for them to hear me say “I’m sorry” and for them to hear me pray and beg God for His grace in my life. It’s also important that they realize that any good thing that they might happen to see in me or our home is a direct reflection of Jesus in me and to give Him the glory!! We give Him glory together when we praise Him for answered prayers.
Every morning as we start school, the first thing we do is gather on my bed or on the play room couch. We’ve been doing it this way for the past 5 years and I pray that we always start our day with God.
We generally read a few Scripture verses, discuss them, say some of the scriptures we have memorized for review, talk about prayer requests and pray together.
That’s it. 🙂 It’s not anything fabulous, but it’s important to me.
This is where you come in – I would LOVE to hear from any of you that have any tips to share on praying WITH your children!! We have put together a few prayer “aides” over the years that I will be sharing…but I would love some new ideas and encouragement to keep on keeping on!!
