I was pleasantly surprised by this little book I received in the mail recently for review called I Am a Church Member by Thom Rainer, who is president and CEO of Lifeway. I thought to myself, “a book about being a member of a church? Huh?”
I quickly realized how important this book is for me as well as any believer who finds themselves involved in a church body. And actually, after I finished this book, I forwarded the title to a few of our church leaders because I thought it would be GREAT to read this as a church body!!
As a church member, I know for me, it is so easy to become critical and negative when our focus is OFF. In my own life, God has convicted me many times when I’m thinking more about myself and my own preferences instead of the church as the Body of Christ and seeking to glorify God. We are human. It’s going to happen. BUT, I believe it’s a great thing to be intentional and proactive about keeping our hearts in check regarding our church family.
In this book, the author asks us to make commitments after reading each of the 6 chapters. Each of the short 6 chapters include an “attitude adjustment” of sorts that we all need to adopt if we are going to seek to be a healthy church that honors the Lord and not inward focused.
The six attitude changes we need to make as church members are:
1. I will be a FUNCTIONING member of my church.
2. I will be a UNIFYING member of my church.
3. I will not let my church be about my preferences.
4. I will PRAY for my church leaders.
5. I will lead my family to be healthy church members.
6. I will TREASURE church membership as a gift.
Ya’ll, I really believe that these attitude adjustments can make a HUGE impact on the life of our church bodies. When we get frustrated about the color of the paint on the walls, what the pastor is wearing, how many songs we sing or what KIND of songs we sing…our hearts are not in the right place.
In my own life, I have seen that FAITHFULLY PRAYING for my church and her leaders has brought about HUGE changes in the amount of negativity in my own mind and heart. The more I pray for my church, the MORE I LOVE and the LESS I am critical.
If you are reading this blog post and are a member of a church family, will you please check out this book and consider making a commitment to PRAY daily for your church and pastors?? I really believe this is where it starts and where God can accomplish the most for His glory.
Are you with me?

This sounds like a really great book. I pray for my church leaders daily because I grew up as the daughter of a missionary and pastor, and church leaders are often under criticism. They’re also under more spiritual attack, which is why I try to give other people the benefit of the doubt when offended.
