“Writing prayers does more than quiet distractions. It helps us “talk” more directly to God. We can release more thoroughly what is in our hearts, and commit it to our Creator. As thoughts and feelings flow on to paper, the action of writing actually generates additional reflections that can be expressed.” Richard Bauman
I have always been one to write in my Bible. I have years and years of little quotes from sermons, prayers for others and nuggets from my devotion time. This is probably one of my favorite things about the journaling Bible — more space to write in my little notes.
Now instead of cluttered margins, I have wide open spaces! {There is not a thing wrong with smaller margins and I will always treasure the Bibles from years past that I have written in! I’m just a little giddy with the prospect of more space to write!}
This is an older Bible of mine:
But now, look at these beautiful wide open spaces for me to write in:
So, now that we’ve established the beautiful wide margins in the journaling Bible , what exactly do you WRITE in those margins?
Ways to Use Journaling Bible as Prayer Journal
- Write in short prayers based on Scripture {Praying God’s Word is my favorite way to pray!}
- Write in short, personal prayers for family members concerning things happening right now in their lives. Don’t forget to place a date beside your request! And if God answers or you see results, jot in an update and place date there as well!
- Take notes from sermons, but turn the notes into a prayer for God to do that work the pastor is talking about in your own life. When your pastor talks about loving others, you can write “help me to love like You, God.” When your pastor talks about a sin you may struggle with, you can write “God, with your help I am victorious!”
- I have often written in prayer requests for the world around me. I have prayers for the country of Iraq, with dates beside them. I have requests written in when tragedy happens in a certain location. As always, don’t forget to date these so you can look back and remember what was happening at that time!
- Gratitude — it fills my heart with such joy to look back over little notes I’ve taken at various times in my life where I was GRATEFUL. It might be as simple as, “thank You, Lord, for your grace.” Or it might be more specific, “thank You, God, for the surprise note I got in the mail that made my day.” You will love looking back over these in the years to come!
- I love thinking about my kids looking back over my Bibles in the future where I’ve written, “praying this verse for my kids” with a date beside it. I hope my children know that they are so prayed for every day of their lives!
“I’d no idea that that this making a list of blessings it’s actually guaranteed to change your life. I mean — if I told you that that doing this one thing increases your happiness, improves your physical health, and is exactly what God made you for — would you do it?
Researchers said of those who do this one thing of keeping a gratitude journal:
“Participants who’d kept a gratitude journal felt better about their lives as a whole and were more optimistic about the future … they were a full 25 percent happier than the other participants. They sleep 1/2 hour more per evening, and exercise 33 percent more each week and felt more joyful, enthusiastic, interested, attentive, energetic, excited, determined, and strong.”Ann Voskamp
So, what about you? Do you like writing in your Bible? Do you take notes or write prayer requests down? I would love to hear how you utilize the margin space in your Bible?

Thanks so much for sharing your Bible with us. This article is such a inspiration to show me how I can incorporate prayers as I journal. I love the idea to include the date so that when I look back I can see what I was thinking at that time. I really have learned a lot from your blog and really appreciate all the effort that goes into it. Blessings to you!

Thank you so much for your kind words, Kathy!! I’m glad you stopped by. I have SO loved looking back over the years at things I wrote during various seasons of life. Those little dates beside verses point to the FAITHFULNESS of God!!

I love the new(?) Journaling Bibles and looking at what others have done with drawings, lettering, etc. I am not good at either! I have written a brief note – sometimes; more often, I would just underline the scripture that has meant something…but not dated it!
From reading your post, I see how I can include a short prayer – AND DATE – within the margins of the Bible. Not sure about any of the other (drawings, etc.); but I might have to try!
Thanks for sharing! I am bookmarking this post to keep as a reminder for future notes!

Barbara, I’m definitely a words girl. The art that some people do is AMAZING and I love it, but I”m not very capable. ha!! I will say, I have a few posts coming up on the blog in the next month where I tried a painting technique that I found on Illustrated Faith and I actually like the way it turned out!! So stay tuned…even for us non-artistic types, there are still things we can do!! Of course, most of my pages will just have little notes on them, but it is fun every now and then to try something new.

Great post Candace. I know we’d be fast friends in real life if we ever meet.

I love the idea of a journaling bible. I also write in my bible as much as I can in the small margins. I never thought of putting the date next to my notes. I love that idea,
Thank you!
