The 2nd half of January we will be learning about PENGUINS! Fun! I chose to do a unit on penguins not only because I thought it would be fun, but because for the last few years this has been Hannah’s favorite animal! She doesn’t know yet that we’re doing a unit on penguins, but she is going to be SO excited!! 🙂
The “bulk” of our unit will focus on the book Mr. Popper’s Penguins! This is the first time that we are going to do a unit based on a chapter book. We will see how it goes! I have heard nothing but great things about this book from several fellow homeschoolers, so I am really excited to get this unit going! There is a fabulous Mr. Popper’s Penguins unit study AND lapbook (for free!) found on Homeschool Share! Also, take a peek at my friend Ami (creator of HSS) and her pictures on her blog of the Mr. Popper’s Penguins lapbook that she and her son worked on the past few weeks!! Doesn’t it look awesome??
Fun Printables and Links
~ There are also quite a few penguin mini-books included in the Arctic Animals lapbook from HSS!
~ Check out this Penguin File Folder game (that Ami also created!) Wouldn’t this be perfect for the preschooler I have tagging along with our schooling now?? Be sure and scroll down on this page and there are links and printables that could turn into a full-blown lapbook for your preschooler to do!
~ Penguin Coloring pages – my girls have to have a coloring page everyday to go with our unit. Yep, they ask for them! More coloring pages, lots of coloring pages…
~ How about a cute penguin song? There is sheet music, which would probably be more fun, I could print it off and play/sing it with the kids.
~ This page has a Color-by-Math penguin on this page that will be perfect for the girls! This will help review their basic addition facts!
~ A clip on youtube of emperor penguin babies! So cute!
Crafts and Projects
~ Isn’t this a cute fingerprint penguin?
~ Awesome activity where you get to act out how the emperor penguin carries their eggs!! I love it!
~ Painting a penguin with a potato?? Sounds fun! Here are the directions!
~ I got a “Penguin Toob” of little penguin figures for the kids to play with, they will sit out in a basket during our penguin unit. I found mine at Hobby Lobby, and they are just like this found on amazon, but all different penguin types.
**I’d love to find a few more Penguin crafts…if you come across any cute ones, please share!

I love Mr. Popper’s Penguins! It is such a fun book! My 8 yo is reading it now on her own. It’s the longest book she’s ever read and she is loving it. I didn’t know HSS had a study for this… hmmm…. You’ve got the best ideas, I love your blog!

Today, I went to the beach with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is totally off topic but I had to tell someone!

Just about all of whatever you say is astonishingly legitimate and it makes me wonder why I had not looked at this in this light previously. This particular piece really did switch the light on for me personally as far as this particular issue goes. Nevertheless there is actually just one point I am not really too cozy with and while I make an effort to reconcile that with the actual main idea of your position, allow me see just what the rest of the visitors have to point out.Nicely done.
