Do you have your passports ready?
Here are all the plans at Serendipity for the continent study of Africa.
Marilyn has some fabulous resources, links and book lists for the country we’re starting with: Africa!
Just check out the great links and resources that HSS has for Africa! I’m going to be printing off the animal cards and Africa cards, laminating them and putting them in our continent boxes!
One of our main texts will be Ann Voskamp’s A Child’s Geography. I have wanted this book for a long, long time. I’m so excited to have an excuse to buy it! Ann’s blog, A Holy Experience, has been an encouragement to me for a few years now. When I found out she had written a geography book (she is also a homeschool mom) that was geared towards instilling love into our children’s hearts for all the peoples of the world…I knew I wanted to share that with my kids.
Book List
*Hero Tales by Dave and Neta Jackson ~ from this book we’ll read the story of David Livingstone who was a missionary to Africa.
*Missionary Stories with the Millers ~ from this book we’ll read another story about David Livingstone, missionary to Africa.
*David Livingstone – I also got a biography about this missionary written for children from Rainbow Resource. I think it will be neat to focus on 1 missionary more thoroughly as we focus on each continent.
*Masai and I
*When Africa Was Home
*Why Mosquitos Buzz in People’s Ears
*The Day of Ahmed’s Secret
*My Rows and Piles of Coins
*Faraway Home
*Honey…Honey…Lion
*A is for Africa
*Jambo Means Hello
*The Perfect Orange
*Fire on the Mountain
*When Africa Was Home
*I Lost My Tooth in Africa
Videos/Movies
*Why Mosquitos Buzz in People’s Ears ~ Reading Rainbow video
*Children’s Stories from Africa
*Mummies Made in Egypt
*I Lost My Tooth in Africa ~ Reading Rainbow
*The Lion King
*Chariots of Fire
Africa Continent Box!
*The continent box is a box I will have for each continent. Inside each box will contain just about anything I can find related to that continent! 🙂 There are several purposes to these continent boxes. For one, they are a VISUAL and HANDS-ON addition to the great books and lessons we will be having. Secondly, they contain many factual cards in them. This will be great for our workboxes, I can have Hannah go to the box choose 1 animal she wants to learn more about, read the card and then narrate or write in her journal the new facts she learns about that animal. That is one example, but I hope to have many things in each box that will make for good independent learning. I really, really like putting things INTO my kids HANDS, as you’ve probably noticed before. 🙂 This box could also serve as something for your kids to hold and look at as you are doing a longer read-aloud.
*note – I got my passport, world flag stickers and animal stickers from Rainbow Resource
In the Africa box:
*Map of Africa
*Map of world with Africa colored in
*Animals cards of animals in Africa (from HSS)
*Landform cards (from HSS)
*Ancient Egypt toob (this has little pyramids, pharaohs and more)
*little book about children from Africa (I have these little individual versions of the Children Just Like Me from DK books. I have one little book from each continent…they came free in Chick-Fil-A meals a few years ago! I knew I saved those little books for some reason!!)
*toy animals that originated in Africa

Candace,
I have been following along with your posts about this here at your blog and over at serendipity.
I am really leaning towards doing this! It looks so fun and I know the boys will love it!
I am thinking of starting in the fall. It will give me time to gather my supplies. Thanks so much for sharing!

Hey! I saw those Schleich (sp) animals over at the Tractor Supply store yesterday. I didn’t look at the prices, but I didn’t know if you knew that they had them. Looks like a fun unit!

Candace, absolutely wonderful!

Fun! We really need to take a trip around the world. We’ve studied so much world history that we haven’t taken the time to just learn about the different countries/continents in the present.
Thinking…this might be something we tackle lightly over the summer. Or I might make it a unit study next school year….hmmm.

I follow your blog and I had a couple of questions about the Africa unit. I was wondering if I could ask you some questions via email? If that is okay, here is mine: ruthkerri (at) yahoo (dot) com.
Thanks so much!

Very fun Candace! I was just looking at the Africa units on HSS yesterday. I am loving all of the lapbooks over their. I printed 200 pages last week and have a ton more that I want to print for this summer. HSS is my favorite homeschool site!

Candace,
I just bought A Child’s Geography this year during their scratch and dent sale. I don’t think we’ll start our world tour quite yet, but I’ll be looking at your posts to help provide LOTS of ideas. I love the continent box idea and will probably incorporate that as well.
Thanks so much for sharing about this new adventure for your family. I’ll have to blog about our tour of the USA we do this coming year.
