I forgot to add this in my post on Russia —
We will be learning about Brother Andrew, who is known for smuggling Bibles into Russia during the Cold War. He has been given the nickname “God’s Smuggler” and wrote a book by this title as well, which I hope to read in the next few weeks. I think Brother Andrew’s prayer is so powerful…and gives us much to think about, as well as much to be thankful for!
“Lord, in my luggage I have Scripture that I want to take to Your children across this border. When You were on earth, You made blind eyes see. Now, I pray, make seeing eyes blind. Do not let the guards see those things You do not want them to see.”
Brother Andrew also founded the ministry called Open Doors created to give support to persecuted Christians. One neat thing (that is also different from other missionaries we have studied) is that Brother Andrew is still alive! His most recent book is called Secret Believers, a book about what happens when Muslims become Christians.
Here is a good page with a brief biography if you’d like to read more about him.
We will be reading the chapter in this book that is about Brother Andrew.
Here is another children’s biography about Brother Andrew.
**if anyone has anymore ideas on sharing this missionary with my children, please leave me a comment! I’d love to find a coloring page or other ideas! I may have to work on my own little “worksheet” to go along with our study of Brother Andrew…but would love to find more if anyone knows of anything!

Candace,
I have been following along with your Serendipity Around the World studies this year. We’re a little behind you, just heading into China and India. You have mentioned a book called Hero Tales which I’d like to find. Can you tell me who the author is and maybe where you found it? I’ve loved “borrowing” from your posts this year! Thanks.
