Whew, I must admit, I’m feeling a bit weary towards the end of this year long of travels. We are kind of having to rush our last few continents in order to finish in this school year…I should have planned the school year a little better at the beginning to know how long I’d need on each continent! I have LOVED our year around the world, learning about the peoples, cultures, missionaries, and geography of each land. But I’m also anxious to move on to our new school year plans in a few weeks. 🙂
So, to South America we go next week! 🙂 And then, the last continent of Antarctica to finish up our world tour. For any of you planning this around the world study for next year, 2 weeks is NOT enough time to cover a continent! LOL! So, be better planners than I am! 🙂
BOOKS
RESOURCES & LINKS
Here are a few resources for South America from HSS (updates: HERE is the page of South American resources I couldn’t find the other day, it has the animal cards on it that i like to use in our continent boxes.)
The Great Kapok Tree – a fabulous unit study and lapbook on the rainforest! (we will review the unit study we did on this last year, one of our favorites!)
South America resources from Enchanted Learning
Unit study ideas for the country of Argentina
South America resources from abcteach
Brazil unit study ideas
South America worksheets (crossword puzzle, word search, fill in the blank, etc.)
Our church has a ministry and orphanage down in Belize, I would like us to discuss this so that my children are aware and can be praying. There is a team leaving for Belize to finish building the orphanage home on Saturday!
My brother’s wife, her parents and siblings were missionaries in Guatemala, I would like to remind my children of that and also possibly get together with Rachel so she can show us any pictures and items she has from there. They have given us gifts from there too, that we need to pull out next week! (OOPS! just talked to my SIL and she reminded me that Guatemala is in Central America which is a part of North America. Oops. Good thing I’m learning all this geography right along with my kids! LOL!)
Of course, one of the most famous missionaries to go to South America is Jim Elliot! I have watched End of the Spear years ago, but can’t remember how child-friendly this movie is. I know there is some violence…we may watch this as a family. We will also read about Jim Elliot and Nate Saint.
There is a Torchlighter video for Jim Elliott, and our library has it! Yay! If you click on this link, you can also register to view teacher guides that go with each dvd. (it is free to register.) And there are worksheets and such that you can print off! We have used these with several missionaries and they are very good!
Here is a children’s biography (online, that you could print) of Jim Elliot. I will probably mention that Jim’s wife, Elisabeth, is one of my favorite authors, and show them all the books on my shelf written by her! 🙂

Candace-looks fun! If you need anymore stuff (LOL) you can go to my blog and look under unit studies or search “Argentina” or “South America” for more info and links. I don’t know if your kids are old enough, but Bruchko is an amazing story about an American Missionary in South America. You may just want to read it yourself and then relate some of the stories to your kids.
