I think that we neglect one of the most powerful passages on prayer in the Bible when we don’t teach our children the Lord’s Prayer!! I think in most modern churches today this prayer is overlooked.
However, when Jesus wanted to teach the disciples to pray, He used this very prayer!! I think that says a lot and is a great example for how we should be teaching our children to pray!
The Lord’s Prayer is a great scripture to memorize with your kids – and then, don’t just memorize it, PRAY IT together.
Talk about it. Look at the different portions of the prayer. Talk with your children about what each part means and why we would want to pray for those things. Help them to understand what the words of this prayer mean. Make it personal.
“Hello daddy!
We want to know you.
And be close to you.
Please show us how.
Make everything in the world right again.
And in our hearts, too.
Do what is best – just like you do in heaven,
and please do it down here, too.
Please give us everything we need today.
Forgive us for doing wrong, for hurting you.
Forgive us just as we forgive other people
when they hurt us.
Rescue us! We need you.
We don’t want to keep running away
and hiding from you.
Keep us safe from our enemies.
You’re strong, God.
You can do whatever you want.
You are in charge.
Now and forever and always!
We think you’re great!
Amen! Yes we do!”
