In the past, I have slooooowly begun to do a little bit of study with my girls on Greek and Latin Roots. We didn’t last very long. 🙂 So, I was excited to get these Greek and Latin Root cards in the mail from Lone Star Learning to give our root words another try! I love that we received these cards a few weeks before Valentine’s Day – in February, we focused on the LOVE roots and I took a picture with my phone one day. 🙂
These cards are very good quality!! Â You get 60 cards with Set 1, 30 Greek and 30 Latin. They are a thick, glossy card stock and have held up really well with all the times we’ve used them over the past month. I think the illustrations and colors are bright and wonderful. Â This set sells for $39.99 which I probably would not have been able to afford for a set of flashcards, but I do think they are great quality, we just don’t have that kind of extra in our budget for “extras.”
The website states that these cards are intended to be used by 3rd graders all the way up to middle schoolers. My children are 5th, 4th and 2nd and I feel that they all benefitted from our using this set.
My kids and I have used these cards in a few different ways. When we first got the cards, I introduced slowly a few words at a time – usually just 1 or 2 new ones every few days. We would discuss the picture, the root and what it meant. Then, I would use them like flashcards to review them each morning as we did our memory work together.
I also had my girls to quiz each other with the cards, which worked well. One other idea we used was to scatter the word cards around the room and shout out the definition of the root and have the kids run to grab the root card from the floor. Kids love a little bit of competition added to our school day.
The only downside I noticed to these cards is that the English meaning is not on the back of the cards! For people like me, with a terrible memory that don’t memorize as easily as children, it would be nice to not have to hunt down the one card with all the meanings on it for each root. I would love for them to put the meanings on the back.
Overall, we loved these cards and enjoyed this very informal way of introducing my kids to Greek and Latin roots.
