Beginning in January, our family began making strides to live more frugally AND at the same time a more healthy lifestyle! You can read more about our journey & plans here. Most of you probably know that this is hard. We simply cannot afford to walk into our local grocery stores and purchase organic foods on a regular basis. Plus, we are in a tiny town where walmart is our best option for groceries.
But, over the past few months we have been doing a lot of shopping online and I wanted to share some tips with you that I’ve learned. I truly think you can save money this way AND eat more organic foods at the same time.
There are 2 main sources for my online grocery shopping right now and I will give you links to items I purchase as well, to give examples of prices.
First up: Azure Standard.
Azure Standard is a family owned company in Oregon that wanted to start selling healthy foods at affordable prices to families around the country. They are such a blessing to us! Along with the Azure Standard company, the Wood family is the family behind the trucking company that delivers all these wonderful foods to use each month!
First, check to see if there is a delivery anywhere near where you live. My husband used to pick ours up in Knoxville, but a few months ago I started a drop point here closer to our home and it has been fabulous thus far! {If you happen to be local, we still need more customers to get our monthly minimum, please contact me for more info!} You can contact Azure or Covenant Trucking Co. to learn more about your specific drop point if you wish, as well as find out the drop point number, which you will need to order. If there is no stop near you, and you live somewhere near one of their routes, call and talk to them about it! It was pretty easy to get this stop going here!!
Then, you just create an account on the Azure website, browse the HUGE selection of foods and place them in your cart. Order online with a credit card and then there will be a delivery to the specific spots once every 4 weeks!! Your specific drop number will tell the trucking company which delivery truck to put your order on.
Items I order regularly from Azure:
(all organic or natural, many bulk options)
- Oats, rolled, oragnic, 25 pounds, $25.35 (for granola, oatmeal, cookies)
- Popcorn, yellow, organic, non GMO, 5 pounds $4.95
- Blueberries, bulk, frozen, natural, 10 pounds, $23.20
- Strawberries, bulk, frozen, natural, 10 pounds, $20.90
- Sugar, organic evaporated cane juice, 25 pounds, $40.15
- Mini Chocolate Chips, organic, fair trade, 1 pound, $6.45
- Raisins, organic, 1 pound, $2.45
- Ezekiel English Muffins, frozen, 6pkg of 16oz each, $18.00 (for mini-pizzas)
- Chicken Feed, organic, soy & corn free, 25 pounds, $26.80
- Barbara’s Raspberry Fig Bars, 6 pkgs of 12oz each, $22.30
My biggest piece of advice if you are just starting out with Azure is to GO SLOWLY. Just SEARCH for items you already use…order a few things until you get the hang of it, then order a few more the next month. The thing about ordering in bulk is your order is going to look different each month. It is a learning curve to figure out what your family can eat in a month and how much you need to order if you don’t want to run out!
The next place I save some money is by shopping for grocery and household items at amazon. We already have a prime account (we use it for tv, we got rid of cable) and so the free shipping is great!!
In order to save the most with your Subscribe and Save products, first of all you have to make sure the items you are ordering are actually on the subscribe and save program! Secondly, if you order AT LEAST FIVE items monthly, you will save 15% on your total order! This is a big savings! So, the trick is to find items you ALREADY USE and products that are CHEAPER or close to the same price as you could find locally, then when you take off the 15% you will really see a savings!
Items I order from Amazon Subscribe & Save
- Angel Soft, Double Rolls, [4 Rolls*12 Pack] = 48 Total Count
- Clif Bar Energy Bar, White Chocolate Macadamia Nut, 2.4-Ounce Bars, 12 Count
- Stretch Island Original Fruit Leather, Summer Strawberry, 0.5-Ounce Bars (Pack of 30)
- Anderson’s Pure Maple Syrup, Grade B, 32 Ounce (Frustration-Free Packaging)
- Jif Peanut Butter Creamy 28 oz (this is not the specific peanut butter we get, but the PB prices and what is available on subscribe and save changes every time I order!! So, sometimes what you ordered previously won’t be available and you’ll just have to hunt for a different brand or size, etc.)
- Carlson Labs Super Omega-3 Gems, Fish Oil Concentrate, 1000mg, 250 Softgels
- Nutiva Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, 15-Ounce Tubs (Pack of 2)
Take a look around Amazon and see if there are items you would use on a regular basis in their Subscribe and Save. Give it a try! And if you find a good deal on something, please come back and share! I would love to find more items to be delivered right to my front porch each month!
Did you know you can TRY Amazon Prime FREE for 30 days?? Try it out!!

Keep in mind that amazon prices DO change FREQUENTLY. Check your prices before you order each month. 🙂
So, I would LOVE to hear from you!! Do you do any grocery shopping online? What deals have you found? Let’s help each other to eat more healthily and more frugally!!

Love the co-op! Just wish I had more money each month to spend on it.
For PB: my plan is to purchase peanuts from Azure next month and make our own from scratch. From what I hear it’s VERY easy to make peanut butter!

Oh how I understand!! I have to and chip my order DOWN every month! LOL!!

I have been meaning to check out Azure Standard! Nice post, adding you to my bloglovin list!

Thank you so much, Veronica! You definitely need to check out Azure!! It has been such a blessing for my family!!

Do you guys have a Costco near you? We get Jiff there, 2 pack, 48 ounces each, for about $13.00. It’s cheaper than what you are getting on the Amazon thing. Know we save enough on milk alone to pay for the membership. We also get rebates at the end of the year that more than cover the upgraded membership.
You do need to be careful on what items to buy though. Paper products (toilet paper, paper towels), meats, most dairy products, are significantly cheaper. Other items, you need to know the base price at Costco as sales at the local grocery store might be cheaper.
Candace says
Jennifer, thanks for the comments! We do not have a Costco here. Boo. I’ve heard great things about it though!
Megan says
Candace, Knoxville does have a Costco – didn’t know if you meant you didn’t have one where you are or if you just didn’t know we had one. 🙂

These are great tips! Thanks so much for linking it up with us this week!
Candace says
Thank you, Ruth! I love Thrifty Thursday! 🙂
Marcy @ Ben and Me says
We love Azure, too. And use Costco as well. Because it’s summer we are able to use local farmer’s markets to save on produce, too.
You should come link up with my Frugal Family link-up on Thursdays!
Candace says
Marcy – I should!! I see your posts and then forget to link up.

We started ordering through Bountiful Baskets (fresh produce) a couple of months ago. I priced it out, and it was cheaper than buying at the store, usually fresher (and lasts longer), and forces us to try new things. We love it. They have places all over, so maybe one near you. 🙂
Candace says
Hi Audra!! I didn’t mention this in my post (I should!) but we JUST started ordering with an organic produce co-op that has a brand new delivery near us. It is from Global Organics and it is AWESOME produce!! I have heard of Bountiful Baskets but they don’t do it near us.

Enjoyed reading this post. I looked to see if Azure was near me – and not even in my state! Maybe when they get closer this will be an option for us. We’ll see.
Question for you about amazon prime. Have you ever had netflix? Just wondering how they compare. We don’t have cable, but do use Netflix.
Hugs to you friend!
Leslie
Candace says
Leslie, they are getting closer to Asheville, so I do hope they will be over in the Carolinas soon!! We use Netflix AND Amazon Prime combined…just gives us a few more options with both and still cheaper than regular cable. 🙂
Candace says
Ok, forgot to mention how they compare – they are similar, but really still have a lot of different options!
