So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,
till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
and exchange it some day for a crown.
Sometimes verses and songs mean different things in different seasons of life.
Many nights ago, as we sang this old, familiar hymn, the phrase “til my trophies at last I lay down…” seemed to take on new meaning.
What do I cherish? Will I choose to lay the trophies down daily? Will I cling to the cross of Christ — the FINISHED WORK of Christ on the cross that declares me righteous before Him?
What am I clinging to besides the cross? Those are the idols.
The places that still need surrendering. The steps of obedience I still need to take. The walking by faith and in the Spirit that He is trying, so patiently, to teach me.
I was a wretch, I remember who I was
I was lost, I was blind, I was running out of time
Sin separated, the breach was far too wide
But from the far side of the chasm
You held me in Your sightSo You made a way, across the great divide
Left behind, Heaven’s throne,
to build it here inside
And there at the cross You paid the debt I owe
Broke my chains, freed my soul,
for the first time I had hopeThank You Jesus, for the blood applied
Thank You Jesus, it has washed me white
Thank You Jesus, You have saved my life
Brought me from the darkness into glorious light
Song: Thank You Jesus for the Blood
These lyrics echo the gospel we never outgrow — a gospel we cling to, daily.
May we lay down our trophies.
May we surrender our idols.
May we live in light of the cross.
