Since we were getting new chicks as a family, I wanted to incorporate this into our schooling…and we did! And it’s been great!! Here are tons of ideas & books & resources we have used!
We started off with the free lapbook from Homeschool Share, as well as this post on learning about Eggs from Wende at the HSS blog…and the unit just took off from there!
The Enormous Egg (fabulous chapter book read aloud!!)
Chicks & Chickens (one of the main books we used for our info in lapbook)
Chickens Aren’t the Only Ones (great science book that shows all the animals that lay eggs!)
Where Do Chicks Come From?
Chicken Sunday
Rechenka’s Eggs (Paperstar)
Chick cupcakes we made using idea found here!
We have had so much fun learning about our new chickens!! If you’d like to see more of our chickens, click here!

THANK you for these resources! We are not allowed to have chickens, but we are going to be hatching some in a few weeks! Our county extension center loans an incubator and gives you 12 eggs AND a curriculum for $20. We are going to hatch some eggs, take care of some baby chicks, and then give them to a local homeschooler when they get too big and smelly. Looking so forward to this and your resources will be so awesome!!! Thanks!

I did the egg squeeze test with the kids (teens) after finding it on youtube… I broke two of them. No one else could break them and even my husband couldn’t, but when I tried to show him that they wouldn’t brake I crushed one so hard there was egg yolk across the room on the ceiling… I was like, “Now hang on, maybe that one was really weak shelled is all.” So I grabbed up another one that looked stronger aaaaand did it again… in my left hand! Worked better with the brown eggs rather than the pale eggs we had, but still… Do I have crazy strong hands or something? I have lifted a lot of hay bales in my life. Maybe one finger put more pressure than the others and made a weak spot? Ooooooor I’m weird LOL!
