Headed to Japan!!

With our world travels taking us to Japan, I am excited because we will be “rowing” some Five in a Row titles that I have been looking forward to: A Pair of Red Clogs, Grandfather’s Journey and Grass Sandals.

A Pair of Red Clogs

In addition to many of the lessons found in our beloved FIAR manuals, we will do a bit of the following for the next few weeks:

*HSS resources for A Pair of Red Clogs (including lapbooking/notebooking pages)

*This page (from Scholastic) has a printable mini-book for your child to practice writing the Japanese numbers. (if specific link doesn’t work, look for “calligraphy mini-book.”

*This page has lots of Japan resources — scroll down and there are 2 videos that show counting in Japanese and Introduction to Japanese language.

*Crayola has a printable kimono paper doll to color and cut out

*DLTK has quite a few Japan ideas as well

*Free Japan Lapbook! (some great lapbooking pieces!)

*See your name in Japanese (I printed these for our notebooks too!)

*We will briefly discuss WW2 and Pearl Harbor. I will show the kids my pictures from when I was in Hawaii at Pearl Harbor. I also purchased a few kids books and items at Pearl Harbor, so we will be able to use those this week as well.

*I hope to get in a visit with my grandfather who was a pilot in WW2 and let him show the kids the pictures of his planes, tell stories, etc. I know my grandparents would love it, and it would be good for my kids to hear some of this history from someone who actually lived it!

*Writing Prompt: Write a story about an imaginary journey you went on. (You could also use this to write about a real journey you have taken.) Questions to prompt the student: Where did you go? How did you get there? What did you bring with you? What did you see while you were there? What did you like best about the place you traveled to? What did you miss about home?

*Introduce Haiku poetry

*Origami

*Eating out at a Japanese restaurant!

*Also having a meal here at home where we eat on the floor, possibly.
