Here are a few verses that stood out to me in Proverbs chapter 29.
“Correct your son and he will give you rest; yes, he will give delight to your soul.” Prov. 29:17
“Do you see a man hasty in his words? There is more hope for a fool than for him.” Prov. 29:20
“An angry man stirs up strife, and a furious man abounds in transgression.” Prov. 29:22
“A man’s pride will bring him low, but the humble in spirit will retain honor.” Prov. 29:23
We have noticed in our look through the book of Proverbs that there are some common themes.
Carefully choosing the words we speak
Anger (if we stir up strife with our anger, we are not following the Godly wisdom we have learned about in His Word.)
Generally, when studying God’s Word, if we notice certain things He points out to us over and over again, we can assume those things are important to God. So, what have we seen from the book of Proverbs that is important to God?
From looking more closely at the book of Proverbs, we learn that God gives us wisdom through His word, and that wisdom is very important for us to cling to! We have learned that our tongues are a good test of how much of that Godly wisdom we have in us. What we do with our anger can also show us where we are on the path to wisdom. Finally, a big point outlined time and time again is that humility is a big part of that Godly wisdom.
Father, I ask you to help me take these important truths and write them on my heart. I ask you to continue teaching me and showing me the importance of carefully choosing my words. I ask you to remind me when I need to slow down, pray, humble myself and display Your wisdom. Convict my heart when I have not chosen the path of Your wisdom. So many times I rush off and speak too quickly, or out of anger, and I know that is not pleasing to You. Continue to grow in me Your heart for humility and wisdom.
