Scripture
“Remember my affliction and my wanderings, the wormwood and the gall!
My soul continually remembers it and is bowed down within me
But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope:
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
‘The Lord is my portion,’ says my soul,
‘therefore I will hope in him.’
The Lord is good to those who wait for him,
to the soul who seeks him.
It is good that one should wait quietly
for the salvation of the Lord.” Lamentations 3:19-26
In the Waiting
In this passage in Lamentations, the author is looking back and remembering afflictions and wanderings. His soul continually thinks on these things and is “bowed down within him.”
But, this I call to mind and therefore I have hope! Oh friends, we cannot stay in our downcast place of darkness. When we remember our afflictions and our mistakes and the evil around us, we despair. But, like the author of Lamentations, we need to keep moving those thoughts toward Jesus and recall the love of the Lord!
His love for you never ceases! His mercies are never-ending! Great is His faithfulness. The Lord is our portion. He is our hope! He is good to those who wait on Him. And it is good for us to wait quietly on Him…and on Him alone.
Today, if you find yourself in despair, ponder His love anew. How have you seen evidence of His love in your life? How have you seen Him at work? Count your blessings, write them down. Turn on praise music. Get outside in nature and praise Your creator. Do whatever it takes to “call to mind” the love of the Lord! He alone is our hope!
Prayer
Oh Lord, when I recall the bad I can despair. Help me to think on whatever things are true, noble, lovely and right. Help me to think on Your love. Your steadfast love never ceases! Your mercies never end, they are new every morning. Great is Your faithfulness! You are my portion and I am complete and content in You. You are good to those who wait on You, so I wait. And in the waiting, I praise.
