I can’t believe how time flies!! It was actually THREE years ago that we did Exploring Creation with Human Anatomy !! WOW!! It does NOT seem like it’s been that long! This was another “class” we did with our small 3-family co-op. The things we added to the textbook by way of hands-on and group activities really made this subject come alive. I will be honest, also, and tell you that if your kiddos are mostly under 4th-5th grade, you might want to wait a few years! The textbook is the hardest Exploring Creation book in the series. It’s tough reading. Even I had trouble with some of the words! ha! But, I have a feeling we will go through this AGAIN here in 2-3 years when all of my children are old enough to really retain the information. I wanted to keep track of all the activities we did, so here is the Human Anatomy landing page for my blog. 🙂
Chapter Activities:
Chapter 1 ~ Cells {diagram of cell and edible cells}
Chapter 2Â & 3 ~ Bones {dissecting chicken bones and field trip}
Chapter 4 & 5 ~ Digestion, Nutrition
Chapter 6 ~ Respiratory System {cow lung dissection, beware, lots of gross pictures}
Chapter 7 ~ blood {making a model of blood with food}
Chapter 8 ~ the heart {graham cracker & marshmallow model of the heart}
Chapter 9Â & 10Â ~ the brain {dissecting a cow’s brain, looking under microscope, play dough brain model}
Chapters  11 ~ senses {dissecting cow’s eyeball, crawling through life size ear, eye diagram, taste test}
Chapter 12 ~ skin, hair nails, bacteria {3 activities to learn about bacteria}

“The textbook is the hardest Exploring Creation book in the series. It’s tough reading.” Oh, no. Maybe I’ll come back to Apologia’s book later.
We’ve been covering earth science and general science long enough, but if it’s going to be a struggle for my 8 and 9 year olds to use Apologia, I’ll have to look somewhere else.
I really appreciate you sharing what it’s really like. 🙂

Cheri, I don’t know. I hate to turn you off from it if your kids would be good with it. Is there a sample chapter anywhere? I felt like my kids would have done better with it in a few more years. Also, I would think about if you are good at explaining stuff to them – summarizing, etc. Part of my struggle with this book is that even I didn’t understand much about human anatomy so I had a hard time summarizing! LOL! Ok, found a sample for you, look over this whole chapter and see what you think. Another idea is to spread it out – we never could have done a chapter a week in this book. http://shop.apologia.com/anatomy-and-physiology/223-exploring-creation-with-human-anatomy-and-physiology.html

I had whole comment worked out about how my son has trouble developing vocabulary, but then we looked over the sample chapter together. The author writes like I do and we think we can make it work.
I especially appreciate the details they cover, even if we take longer studying. Of all the sciences, understanding the complexity of a living organism is one of the greatest testimonies to a Genius Creator.
Thank you very much!

Cheri! I’m just glad you looked first! I would hate to make a recommendation that wasn’t the best fit for your family!! So glad you took a peek and think it will work for ya’ll!!

Hi Candace! Do you have a post you can point me to on how you ran your small co-op? I am looking to start one next semester! Also, did you use MY BODY with this Anatomy text? I read one review that suggested there is a similar activity to the My Body gig that is included with the notebooking book? I’m not sure if I’ll buy the notebooking book or not… Thanks in advance!
DeborahBee says
OK, nevermind! I answered my own questions 🙂 This post is great for explaining your co-op: http://www.mercyisnew.com/2010/10/07/apologia-human-anatomy-update/, and I noticed you DID use the My Body book too. Did you also use the notebooking pages, or skip them? The activities look FUN! Thanks for blogging and sharing ideas.

Deborah! Hi and thanks for stopping by! We loved the My Body Book!! We did not use the journaling/notebooks with this one, though they usually are great!
