Our next week of learning will be all about APPLES!! This is one of my favorite fall units! The FIAR title, How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World, is also one of my favorites! This should be a fun week! In this story, a little girl wants to bake an apple pie but finds the market closed. So, she travels all around the world getting the ingredients she needs.
Activities and lesson ideas
*we will find all the countries mentioned in the book on the map, I’d like to print off a world map and number the countries in order that the girl travels them in the book.
*Here are the resources from HSS for How to Make an Apple Pie…from these we will be doing: the Vermont tab book, and the country minit books.
*HERE is a set of flashcards for the book – there are cards for the countries visited, transportation used and the ingredients she found for the pie.
*If you scroll down on this apple lesson plan you will see a printable diagram of the “parts of an apple” for the child to label
*THIS blogger has wonderful freebies! I printed off the types of apple cards, we will look at each one the day we do our taste testing.
*Oh and look what I just found that I hadn’t seen before – a Johnny Appleseed and Apple lapbook on homeschool share! One of the pages the girls will love is guessing how many seeds are in an apple! You write down your guess, then cut open an apple and see how close you were!
*We will also use the taste testing booklet from homeschool share (found in the apple lapbook) and taste several different kinds of apples. We will see which ones we like and which ones we don’t care for.
*We are planning a trip to the apple orchard, probably on Thursday of this week! This is a field trip we did a few years ago and I’m really looking forward to going again!
*For a fun painting craft we will do apple prints. I have never done this with the kids before, so I think they will enjoy this! Just cut an apple in half, dip in paint and then stamp onto the paper!
*Of course we must have some baking this week! One new thing I’d like to try is homemade applesauce! I think the kids will think this is great. I saw someone mention that they do this in the crockpot – even better! So, we will be trying that this coming week. I also want to show the kids the different spices and ingredients that the little girl found in the story – smelling, looking at, measuring.
