From the very start of our homeschooling journey, I have been burdened, more than with any other subject, to get The Word into and onto my kids hearts. I almost can’t explain why this has been so important to me…other than to say that God’s Word has been a lifeline for me in very difficult times ~ and joyous times ~ and I pray, with each passage we memorize, that in the future, in their time of need, my children will have God’s very heart and wisdom come to mind as they are seeking out various things.
Every morning that is a school day for us, we come to the couch and read from various things together: a Children’s Bible, a picture book, history or science texts. But, we always, always work on our memory work together during this time on the couch as well. {We always have a Scripture passage we are working on, sometimes a hymn we are memorizing, and sometimes a poem.}
I made these laminated cards of the verses we are working on and some of the ones that the girls still remember. I found that we were having trouble remembering them long term. So, for now, we are working on 1 Scripture passage, 1 poem and then 1 “old” verse to refresh our memory. Those are the 3 that we recite daily, for now it is working. 🙂
I pray everyday that my children will love the Lord and love His Word. God, through His Word, has met so many needs in my life. He is so good to give us this gift.
God’s Word sustains me.
God’s Word encourages me.
God’s Word is the answer to many of my prayers.
God’s Word is wisdom for me.
God’s Word is my Rock.
God’s Word gives me hope at times in the valley.
God’s Word allows me to pray the very heart of God over my children.
God’s Word fills me with joy.
God’s Word challenges me to die to self.
God’s Word is a love letter from my Father, to His needy, needy daughter.
I pray that God will fill these same needs in my children’s hearts as they grow in Him. By memorizing His Word together, I am hoping and praying that my children will have a treasure chest full of the most beautiful treasures to look at, meditate on, believe in and trust wholeheartedly.
Here are my girls reciting some verses and the poem, In 1492. The first 2 videos are from November last year, and the poem and Psalm 139 are from last week! 🙂

Thank you for allowing me to share the joy of Scripture memory with you. Hearing my children recite scripture has most definitely been, in all honesty, one of the greatest highlights of motherhood for me.
I’d love to hear YOUR tips on memorizing with children!! Do share! And head over to A Holy Experience (link below) for more on Scripture Memory @ Walk With Him Wednesday. Be sure to read the other posts on memorization @A Holy Experience, they are beautiful!!

I just love this post, and I’m glad I found it this morning! I also posted about scripture memory this morning – http://homeschoolsuccess.blogspot.com/2010/11/baptism-bible-verse.html
I really like the way you have your children on video – I think I will try that with my kids as well. Thank you for a beautiful post!

Candace!
Thanks for sharing this. It is wonderful how you work with the kids and it is so fun to hear their voices…and your too. Finally, a voice to the face!

To cycle through those laminated cards! Great idea!
There’s something about children doing this…

We just started using the Scripture Memory System from Simply Charlotte Mason a few weeks ago, and so far I really like it. We use it for all of our memory work, not just scripture. Here’s a link—> http://simplycharlottemason.com/timesavers/memorysys/
We have long made it a habit to memorize longer passages, but I’m not very good to go back and refresh our memories from time to time. I hope this system will enable us to do that!
Great post and great job, Candace! God bless you in your efforts!
