“…give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18
God’s Word tell us to give thanks in all circumstances. I admit I have struggled with this passage before. How do I give thanks for THIS?
In the book 31 Days of Praise the author makes a distinction that has really changed my perspective on this passage!
The author reminds us that the passage in 1 Thessalonians doesn’t say to FEEL thanks but to GIVE thanks.
“…the Bible doesn’t command us to feel thankful in every situation. It doesn’t command us to manufacture positive feelings. instead, it commands us to give thanks. This doesn’t mean you should deny your negative thoughts and feelings and attitudes, sweeping them under some emotional rug.”
She goes on to remind us that in the psalms David pours out his heart to God. And he praises Him, too.
As a feeler and one who seeks to be authentic, I have so often felt guilty for not FEELING thanks in all things. But, to GIVE thanks even if I don’t FEEL thankful? That I can do. As a matter of obedience. It’s like just that little word shift is the freedom for me to know that I can be obedient and give thanks even if I don’t feel it.
And often, what I have noticed, is that when you act out of obedience and GIVE thanks, God begins to change your heart and fill you with peace. Those negative thoughts begin to fade.
“Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in His wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of His glory and grace.”
