I am so, so excited to FINALLY be sharing a post with you that I have been dying to post. A few months ago I began noticing these gorgeous journaling entries in people’s BIBLES on Instagram!! I oohed and ahhhed over them and eventually, several months later, decided to buy my own Christmas present: the ESV Journaling Bible.
Here is the Bible I bought on Amazon: ESV Single Column Journaling Bible (Brown, Flap with Strap)
Look at the margins on these pages!! I love taking notes, writing dates beside meaningful verses, writing short prayers, highlighting and more in my Bible. I love that someday my kids will be able to look back on my Bible and see that I loved God’s Word, that I read and prayed through it, that I used it regularly.
Updated: I am collecting all my Bible journaling posts here so you can see them all in one place!
I will not always do fancy pages, but I love that I now have the SPACE to do so if I wish! For me, this is like the perfect combination of Bible reading, scrapbooking, journaling and praying all together!! Oh and Project Life!! This combines a LOT of my loves into one place.
Daily {mostly daily} I share Scriptures that I am reading and praying. There are printable calendars of the Scriptures I am Praying HERE. I would love for you to join me on Instagram with the hashtag #prayingthescriptures as we pray God’s Word together!!
Tools for Journaling
- Journaling Bible {I did choose to go the real leather route because I’ve been through 3 Bibles in the last 3 years.}
- I share my favorite PENS and HIGHLIGHTERS in this post!
- Micron Ink Pen Set – I cannot believe I hadn’t found these til a month ago!! You can write in your Bible and IT DOESN’T BLEED THROUGH THE PAGES!!! Hallelujah and amen!
- Pigma Brush Pen Set – these will give you a thicker stroke, if you want to do more calligraphy type writing. I’m still trying to learn more lettering styles but I definitely love the look of these markers!
- Prismacolor Professional Quality Watercolor Pencil – these are so cool. You can just use them like regular colored pencils, but you can also just barely wet and smear like water color! I want to get better at this skill too!
- Letters/Numbers Stickers – this is the scrapbooker in me but I LOVE adding words with stickers to make things stand out! It’s such an EASY way to add a creative and unique touch!
- Rubber Date Stamp – of course you can write the date, but I love using the stamp, just adds another dimension and gives it something unique
- No Bleed Highlighters – this is a page with lots of options for NO BLEED highlighters. So far, I haven’t purchased any of these yet…but I hope to soon.

I love this idea so much! I am loyal to my Joyce Meyer Amplified Bible, but I do write in the margins. I am planning on getting my son this Bible and writing little messages and prayers for him in the margins. He’s not even 1 year right now, so by the time I gift it there should be some pretty cool stuff in there for him to read! 🙂

Cate, i love the idea of passing on bibles to our children. Right now, I have 3 older bibles that are fairly well written in…I’m thinking at this stage, each child will get one of those. I have not gotten a bible JUST to write in notes/prayers for my kids, but I love that idea too. I do write little notes like “praying this verse for my kids” with a date beside it. What a BEAUTIFUL treasure and legacy you will be leaving your son!!

I’m getting this Bible for Christmas! Actually I bought it then gave it to my husband to wrap up for me. I can’t wait to start using it. I’ve never been one to write in my Bible so I’m thrilled to start a new tradition and pass this heirloom to my children.

Candace- I ordered the highlighting pencils in your above link. I have used highlighter pencils before and loved them. Will let you know how they work.
Candace Crabtree says
I’ve never used highlighting pencils! Let me know!
Debbie says
Will do!

Does ink bleed through these pages to other side? That is the only thing that bugs me about writing in my current Bible.
Candace Crabtree says
Hey there! Go up to what I wrote about the micron pen set that I linked to — they don’t bleed through! Yay!!
Shannon says
Thank you!

I came across this from a Pinterest post. I’ve just ordered my journaling Bible (it’s to arrive Tuesday!). I was struck by your comment about your children looking back on your journals and knowing your passion for God’s word. While that is definitely true, let them see you in the act, too.
God bless you in your journey!

Wonderful blog! Excited to get started 🙂 Question for those using ACCU gel highlighters… There are several reviews saying these stick the pages together? Or transfer wax?
Candace Crabtree says
Amy, hi and thanks for stopping by!! You know, I read a lot of reviews but must have missed those or I might not have bought them. I have not had this problem! I will say that the Journaling Bible I have does not have the super thin pages that most “traditional” Bibles have. I wonder if that is the difference? I often leave my Bible open, also, I wonder if that gives it more time to kind of “dry?”

Shame on you for creating another terrific post! Awesome stuff, keep up the good work. I see a lot of potential! I wonder if you are an active user with any social networking sites like Digg or Stumble Upon?

My bible is the same one I got when I was christened ( 19 years ago )! It’s a small bible though so I don’t get to write in the margins. Do you find that writing in the margins is better, or supplementary to writing a scripture journal?
Helen says
Thanks. Waiting on my Journaling Bible and supplies to arrive. I started seeing these ideas on Pinerest and they spoke to me. Thanks for sharing the ideas.

I just discovered Bible journaling and would love to do it! I’ve looked at Bibles and they all have such small print! Any suggestions?
Candace says
I have really only seen smaller print too. I’m sorry! I did see somewhere that there is another version of a journaling bible coming out sometime this fall! I don’t know any of the details though.
Lee Anne says
The small font size (7.5 point) is the reason I haven’t bought a journaling Bible. Too small for these old eyes! Crossway is coming out with a large print (9.5 point, still small but better) in August. You can preorder it on their website. I’m looking forward to getting mine.

I just ordered mine Friday. I am going on a women’s retreat with our church next month and I thought this would be a great thing to do while I was gone on this trip. I can wait to get mine and dive in head first.
