Advent Devotions for Kids
I have somewhat of a confession for you. I started thinking about writing some Advent devotions for kids to go along with my Jesus, Light of the World: Praying the Scriptures through Advent…and, instead of coming to you with a full set of devotions, I present to you what is already in the shop!
Say what?
Sweet friends, if you’ve used my devotional, you know that my heart is not to go so deep that we get lost in figuring things out. I was re-reading some of the Advent devotions and realized that these could work for my kids too.
I shared last year, when I released these devotions, that there are ideas for using this as the starting point to a UNIT STUDY on LIGHT for homeschoolers. However, I think you could even JUST use the DEVOTIONS with your kids, too.
How to Use Jesus Light of the World with Your Kids
Mornings – Start every morning by lighting a candle, sitting at the table over coffee and breakfast, and reading the devotional straight out of the book. Simple, short and sweet. This works for public & private school kiddos who are in the morning RUSH as well!
Bedtime – We have started having a “family meeting” every NIGHT before bed at our house. Our mornings are crazy, David leaves for work really early, and I really like closing our day with prayer and just sweet family time. Helps me to forget all those fights and arguments from the day. {grin} So, through the month of December, you could light a candle and read these short devotions as your night time reading. Say a prayer and head to bed!
Dinner time – Maybe evenings are full of sports practice and music lessons. Maybe dinner time is the best time for you all to sit as a family and read a quick devotion! Again, I say, light a candle, since this is all about LIGHT, and read and discuss Jesus as light of the world while you have dinner.
Each morning or evening that you read the devotion, to add to it, you could have a different child take a turn reading the Scripture. Even though the Scripture is printed inside this devotional, I always like to have my kids look up verses and read them out of their Bibles. Good practice. 🙂
Copywork – if you homeschool, or if you’re just looking for extra handwriting practice for your kiddos, have them write out each daily verse that goes with each devotional! For Bible practice, have them find the verse on their own and write it out from their version of Scripture.
Unit Study – if you do homeschool, Â teach in a co-op, have a Sunday School class or private school classroom, study LIGHT in the month of December. I just know that you and your students will be blessed to read through God’s Word through the month and learn all about what LIGHT is. The creation of light, all-powerful God, Jesus as light of the world and then our assignment to be light as well! I have a whole Pinterest Board FULL of ideas on creating educational lessons and ideas to create this unit study!
Advent Crafting – if you’re reading through the devotional with your children and want to add something extra but not an entire unit study, consider doing some of these amazing crafts for kids or home decor projects all based on LIGHT. I have a whole Pinterest Board full of crafting ideas for you, too!
